The internet has a way of making you miserable if you spend too much time consuming all of it's views.
I love the internet, but it gets tiring. I've been saying for a couple years now that I knew this election was going to be the most painful we've ever had, due to it being the first election in the thick of social media. It's not the just the election I'm tired of though, although that's a solid percentage of why as well.
Everyone has an opinion on how we should live. A lot of people post it online. Medium, a blogging social network, has become only preachy life-coaching. It was fine when it was only buzzfeed doing it, but now everyone between the ages of 20 and 25 are doing it.
People like Gary Vaynerchuk rail on this problem, but I think he's also kind of perpetuating it through his inspirational persona. How many people hear him say 20-somethings need to stop life-coaching since they have no life experience and actually hear what he's saying and think he's talking to them?
Let's call it what it is: spam. So many people are posting the same low quality stuff that no one actually fully reads. People saw blog posts from Chase Jarvis and Tim Ferris and wanted to write the same stuff, which is fine, but they have zero clout (or klout) compared to them. Those two guys didn't get famous writing "Top 5 ways to whatever", they got famous being photographers or entrepreneurs. Their experience allows them to write that stuff; it comes after the experience, not before.
"Will, you don't have to read all that stuff." And I don't for the most part. I'm more exhausted by it being thrown at me at all points in my day.
I know I post a lot of stuff, maybe I could be considered spam. (I post multiple things a day after all), but I hope I'm not preaching or telling others how to live. I've slipped up a couple times, but I really try to only blog about stuff I absolutely know about as well as personal experiences I have.
In April, I'm taking a hiatus from the internet. I'm still going to be posting my daily stuff, but I'm not going to venture outside willmalone.com or my Instagram/Youtube upload sections.
I need a break from consuming what the web has to offer, because right now, it's hard to find some really encouraging, real stuff. I just want to read something valuable. I also have a ton of crap to do over the next few months, so hopefully it'll get me to be more productive.
If you feel the same, shoot me a message! If you want to talk about anything at all, you should also shoot me a message! I love talking to people.
